- The Road to Meaning
The process of
reading is very like that of
driving a car. As readers, it is
our charge to "navigate" our way
to meaning as we enter
nonfiction texts and tasks. For
students the,
road to meaning in informational
text is one paved with
challenge and complexity. This
presentation explores what great
"drivers" need to do before,
during, and after reading to
successfully arrive at their
final destination...UNDERSTANDING
THE BIG IDEA!

http://oposite.stsci.edu/edu_nf.html
Created by the Space Telescope Science Institute,
this website provides access to fun and engaging learning
activities about astronomy, all of which live up to the
website's name. The Institute also happens to oversee the grant
administration, planning, scheduling, and public outreach
activities for the Hubble Space Telescope, so it makes sense
that they would have some rather nice materials. While the site
has a number of useful areas, perhaps the strongest element of
the site is the "Amazing Space" section. Here, visitors can
learn about the inner workings of telescopes, read their
in-house publication "The Star Witness", and take in sights of
black holes, comets, galaxies, and gravity at work. Educators
should not overlook the "Teaching Tools" area of the site, as
they will want to look through their classroom activities,
graphic organizers, and reading guides.

From dark matter to the transit of Venus, "The University in the
Classroom" has all the astronomical bases covered for educators. This
electronic educational newsletter is published by The Astronomical
Society of the Pacific and has been published since 1984. Each issue is
designed to help teachers learn more about astronomy themselves, and
then they can bring this new knowledge into their classroom. On the
newsletter's homepage, visitors can read the current issue, subscribe to
receive updates, and also browse through the archives, which stretch
back to late 1984. Within each issue, visitors can read an in-depth
exploration of a certain astronomical subject, complete with classroom
activities and links to other related resources.

Windows to the
Universe is a user-friendly learning
system covering the Earth and Space sciences for use by the general
public. Windows to the Universe has been in development
since 1995. Our goal is to build an internet site that includes a
rich array of documents, including images, movies, animations, and
data sets, that explore the Earth and Space sciences and the
historical and cultural ties between science, exploration, and the
human experience. Our site is appropriate for use in libraries,
museums, schools, homes, and the workplace. Students and teachers
may find the site especially helpful in their studying (and
teaching!) Earth and Space sciences. Because we have users of all
ages, the site is written in three reading levels approximating
elementary, middle school and high school reading levels. These
levels may be chosen by using the upper button bar of each page of
the main site.
http://stellarium.sourceforge.net/
From the project FAQ:
"Stellarium is an open source desktop planetarium for Linux/Unix,
Windows and MacOSX. It renders the skies in realtime using OpenGL,
which means the skies will look exactly like what you see with your
eyes, binoculars, or a small telescope. Stellarium is very simple to
use, which is one of its biggest advantages: it can easily be used by
beginners."
